Motor yacht A is a luxury motor yacht, designed by Philippe Starck and Martin Francis and built by Blohm & Voss – Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel, Germany.
“I designed the Motor Yacht A to be as invisible as possible. I was inspired by the movement of the waves and the reflections of whales in the water.” said Philippe Starck. Its Motor yacht A was launched in November 2004 and delivered in 2008. With a length of 119 meters and a displacement of nearly 6,000 tons, she is one of the largest motor yachts in the world.
Named after the initial of her owners, Andrei Melnichenko and his wife Aleksandra, her bold style has polarized opinions since her launch. It is the largest yacht with an inverted bow and evokes comparisons with submarines and stealth warships. The A has a top speed of 23 knots and a cruising speed of 19 knots, it can cover 6,500 nautical miles in less than sixteen days.
With nearly 2,200 square meters of interior space, including 230 square meters for the owner’s suite, it hides a secret chamber hidden behind mirrored panels. Reflective surfaces are placed liberally throughout the interior, with Baccarat crystal used not only for glassware and tableware, but also for furniture.
There are six guest suites. Their bulkheads can be moved and the suites converted into four large cabins.
Outside, she has a helipad and pool on the forward superstructure and two more pools aft, one of which has a glass bottom and can be viewed from the disco club below deck.
